Adkins was born to a young single mother in various working-class areas of London. When she was a kid she was fond of singing contemporary pop music and learned to play guitar and the clarinet. But it wasn't until her early teens, when she began to discover the rhythm and blues vocalist Etta James and other mid 20th century performers, that she started to consider pursuing a career in music. While she honed her talents in a state-funded secondary school for the performing arts, an acquaintance began uploading songs Adkins composed and recorded on the social media site Myspace. Her music soon caught the attention of record labels and, in 2006 about a year after her graduation the school, she signed a contract with XL Recordings.
